CAHALEN MORRISON & ELI WEST

When Cahalen Morrison and Eli West released their stunning debut album, The Holy Coming of The Storm it met with instantaneous reaction on both sides of the Atlantic. Bob Harris invited them to record a session for his BBC Radio 2 show, saying their music was "quite extraordinary", and Mary Ann Kennedy recorded a studio session with them for BBC Radio 3's World on 3 as well.

Jeff & Vida

Jeff & Vida are a fantastic bluegrass-rooted duo from Nashville. They play a combination of lovely original material, mostly written by Vida, together with Bluegrass and American folk classics by the likes of Bill Monroe and Doc Watson. Jeff wowed us with his stunning Mandolin and Guitar playing whilst Vida's voice took us straight to the heart of great american roots music.

The
Carrivick Sisters
The Lion Hotel, Shrewsbury

A packed house saw Laura and Charlotte perform with a style and professionalism that belies their years. Highlights included self-penned gems 'Charlotte Dymond' and 'Garden Girl', and a great rendition of John Hartford's  'In Tall Buildings'. Sorry, forgot to get some pictures of the sisters, but here's the house band providing support...

The LittleBoro Band

The house band, and also the people who run these events, are the LittleBoro Band from Shrewsbury. Inspired by the sort of music created by Aly Bain's and Jerry Douglas's  'Transatlantic Sessions', we play music rooted in the american or british folk traditions... sometimes both!

We open for the main acts, usually playing around 5 songs.

Friday October 24th, Wightman Hall, The Square, Shrewsbury:

Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers, with support from Two-Faced Tom and the Bootleg Boys.

Great night of rootsy country at atmospheric new venue. This was judged to be Number 10 Best Gig of the Year by Three Chords and the Truth

Will Kaufman - 'Hard Times and Hard Travelin': The Life and Songs of Woody Guthrie.

Some great feedback from Will's gig/presentation. His encyclopeadic knowledge combined with great performances of Woody's songs made for an evening that was entertaining AND educational. Yey! Meanwhile the house band continue to grow, with feedback mentioning especially the quality harmony vocals and interesting arrangments.

The Toy Hearts
At The Hive, Shrewsbury

A great evening of music from the Toy Hearts, led by the fantastic vocals of Hannah Johnson.

The first  set featured some great Bluegrass playing on classics and some of their excellent originals, including The Captain (see the official video here).

The second set saw daddy Stewart Johnson playing his awesome three console steel guitar, with daughter Sophie moving on to her vintage Gibson semi-acoustic to play some great Bob Wills western swing numbers, plus a bit of Rockabilly and a great version of Patsy Clines' Walkin' After Midnight.

The band are currently recording album number 4 and have an extensive tour planned for the spring of 2012.. but have agreed to come back to Shrewsbury in the autumn; so watch this space.
